We forget that most people don't know about the Confederacy, other than the lies their teachers told them. Of course the teachers were lied to as well, so from time to time it's good to go back to the beginning and just do a little bit of review.
You will see many battle flags with 12, 13 and 14 stars. The 12 star St Andrew's Cross Battle flag with the center star missing is said to represent Maryland, as their entire legislature was arrested BEFORE they could vote to secede. Frances Scott Key's Great Grandson was among the Marylanders arrested by the Lincoln administration. This battle standard with the missing center star was used by many units but has been made famous by General Forrest's use of it.
Here are the states that were CONFEDERATE:
The thirteen states represented were: South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, and Kentucky. Note that Missouri and Kentucky never officially seceded, but were slave states, and did have some confederate state governments, although they were in exile for the most part. If one adds Maryland to that one has 14 stars.
I am also willing to bet that you've never been told that Arizona seceded from the Union on March 16, 1861.
