Our Founding Fathers left us very specific instructions on how we must go about amending the Constitution of the United States and, contrary to what some people might believe, it is NOT the job of the United States Senate to amend the Constitution by legislating it away on the floor of the Senate after a spirited debate and a straight up-or-down vote.
As Radio talk show host Mark Levin put it prior to the vote last week: "The Senate intends to vote on changing the Second Amendment without any pretense of going through the constitutional amendment process — none. ... The Second Amendment exists as a protection for us against usurpation by Congress and the rest of the federal government. The Second Amendment protects an individual right and it’s that simple."
If they want to chip away at our Constitutional rights, they're free to try by proposing an amendment to the Constitution... but what they're doing now, attacking the Constitution through legislative fiat, must be stopped.

Update:
Much to Obama's surprise and dismay, the Constitution and our civil rights were ultimately upheld.
